It’s that time of year again. Time to say so long to summer and embrace all that fall has to offer. Cool, autumnal breezes. Magnificent color changes. And all of that fabulous, fall fashion! If you haven’t already said good-bye to your sandals, tank tops and sundresses, the time is soon near. As you begin to revisit your fall favorites, chances are that you will want to add something new. But like any new season, there are so many trends to choose from! It begs the question…
Which trend(s) make sense for y-o-u?
As an image consultant, I know how overwhelming it can be to navigate a new fashion season. So, I’ve done a bit of pre-shopping for you and highlighted some of my personal favorites for the season. Have a look and see which trends speak to you.
Down to earth. While earth tones are what we would expect to see in the fall, they’ve been hard to find the last few years. If these warm tones flatter you, this is your chance to stock up. Choose from luxe hues of camel, honey beige, rust, brick, olive green, burnished gold, copper, and every shade of brown, to be right in step this season.
Hat’s off to you. Looking to try a “new” accessory? Consider adding a hat to your ensemble this fall. While it can take a few tries to find a style that feels right for you, give yourself some time to play. Choose from this season’s fabulous array of cloches, bucket hats, fedoras, berets, or beanies. A hat is a great finishing piece to your outfit, while also being functional in cold weather.
Mad for plaid. From cool girl to schoolgirl, this season you’ll find a plaid in every type of clothing item, plus shoes and handbags. While there’s plenty of traditional color combos to choose form, you may decide to experiment with in one of this season’s more unexpected color options. For the truly adventurous, try some pattern mixing with two of your favorite plaids.
The bigger, the better. This season it’s all about the oversized sweater. Think plush pullovers, cozy cable-knits, and chunky cardigans. When temperatures drop, these relaxed knits offer comfort and warmth, yes, but also on-trend style. For best results, team these roomy knits with a more fitted bottom and, of course, your favorite boot or bootie.
Time for a reboot. Speaking of boots…Have you been a longtime fan of the slouchy boot style? They’re back and more fabulous than ever before. Choose from leather options in colors that range from luxe neutrals to bold hues. Or opt for a textural twist with suede, faux snakeskin and more. These boots are a bestie to a skinny jean or legging, creating balance to a bigger hip or shoulder line.
Your chain of command. If layering delicate necklaces isn’t your thing, then you’ll enjoy the simplicity of a single, chunky chain necklace that gives your outfit the finishing touch it needs. Wear a shorter chain necklace inside an open blouse or team it with a V-neck sweater. Add a longer version anytime you want to add a vertical line to elongate and slim.
Cast a wide net. No doubt you’ve got a pair or two (or ten) skinny jeans. But it’s a new season, filled with new options. So why not expand your jean repertoire and add a “new” silhouette? Consider trying a flare or wide-leg, high-rise jeans. Admittedly the swap from skinny to flare could take a bit of an adjustment. But this cut is so flattering, it may turn out to be your most favorite wardrobe addition this season.
A perennial favorite. We usually think of floral prints as a spring/summer choice, but designers have been presenting floral prints in the cooler months for the last couple of years. This season’s floral dresses are getting a lot of attention. Moodier and broodier than their spring counterpart, fall florals have a darker background as the base of the print, making them look and feel more seasonably appropriate.
A case for capes. The cape is officially back and set to become one of this season’s wardrobe must-haves. Perfect for transitions periods, this is an outwear option that adds style and sophistication to any outfit. As functional as it is fashionable, it allows you to layer underneath with gusto or enthusiasm. What’s more, it easily slips over a blazer or one of this season’s oversized sweaters.
It’s leather weather. Whether real or faux, leather is having a moment. This season you’ll find options beyond just outwear, so now is the time to add a sleek leather dress, polished leather pant or sassy leather skirt. For a more fashion-forward approach, go beyond basic black and opt for one of this fall’s warmer or bolder hues.
I’ve shared ten trends with you, but truth be told, there are a couple dozen more for you to consider! As you delve into the season, take a deep breath and remember this.
