Fall 2017: Sweater Dressing In Style

Who can believe that just a few short weeks ago we were walking around sockless and sans jackets? It seems as though we’ve gone from summer to late fall in a New York minute. While the dip in temperatures may still seem like a shock to the system, there is a silver lining…It’s officially sweater weather!

Over the years many of us have amassed more sweaters than we care to admit. Probably few, however, are sweaters that we really l-o-v-e. Maybe it’s because we’ve been gifted them by well-intentioned family members who don’t know our style.  Or perhaps we think of sweaters as simply items of necessity that should be functional and warm, rather than fashionable and chic. It’s even possible (or dare I say probable) that some of us have had a few sweaters for so long, they seem like faithful, old friends and we hold onto them, despite the fact they may be a little (or a lot) worse for wear.

Whatever your reasons, I’m excited to say this season you’ll actually be inspired to clean out your sweater drawers and swap out your less-than-stellar options.  That’s because the sweater is stealing the spotlight with colors, patterns and sleeve details that officially make it a covetable – and fashionable – item.  Read on for six styles that will encourage you to send your less stylish sweaters packing, paving the way for more contemporary counterparts. And for additional sweater-shopping inspo, check out my curated collection.

Monday SweaterBright On:  I love a soft taupe or gray sweater as much as the next gal, but when it’s cold and gray and damp, there’s nothing like a shot of color to lift the spirits…especially on a Monday.  This pick not only offers you an opportunity to start your week off on a whimsical note, rendered in cashmere it also injects a bit of luxe into your wardrobe. Note: If Monday truly isn’t your jam, choose sweaters that sport Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and so on, offered in other happy hues. (Available at Saks.)

Cardie Party:  Long or short, with buttons or without, cardigans are a key item during theJ. Crew Navy Cardie cold weather months.  Chances are you’ve already got the basics but this season why not go beyond and opt for one with an interesting accent or detail?  Here a classic crewneck cardie has been given a makeover with fun, faux ostrich feathers across the front. It’s a versatile item, working back to everything from your favorite jeans to a leather skirt. What’s more it easily makes the transition from day to night. (Available at Nordstrom.)

Easy Like Sunday Morning 2Easy Like Sunday Morning: My wardrobe philosophy has always been about having easy-to-wear and pair pieces that help you look and feel great. After all, life is hard…getting dressed shouldn’t be!  If you’ve ever longed for a comfy, yet chic weekend sweater, this one is it. The poncho styling means it’s forgiving, while the longer length makes it the perfect companion to leggings, jeggings and the like. What’s more, the color blocking treatment and handkerchief hem up the style quotient.  Fair warning, though. While you may buy it for the weekend, chances are this one will make its way into the work week. (Available at Macy’s.)

Evening Appeal: We tend to think of sweater dressing for day. However this Evening Appeal - One Shoulderseason we’ve got more than a few glam options to help take this wardrobe staple out for a night on the town.  Choose from strategic cutouts, shimmering metallics and shoulder-bearing silhouettes that will take you to drinks, dinner or a holiday soiree.  With this one-shoulder option, you’ll want to skip the necklace and instead opt for a statement earring. Add your favorite black bottom and out you go. (Available at ShopBop.)

Pattern Play: I would never downplay the Pattern Playversatility of solid colors. (I think of them as the building block of any wardrobe.) That said, a steady diet of them can sometimes leave us wanting more. Patterns add a bit of visual interest to any wardrobe and this season fashion gives us a whole bunch to play with.  Think bold stripes, oversized checks and dots with personality. If you’re a bit pattern phobic no worries, as the texture of a knit will tone down even the most outspoken of patterns. Alternatively, if you love the idea of pattern mixing as much as I do, there are plenty of mixed media options, like this patchwork poncho sweater. (Available at Saks.)

Sleeves Please:  What’s the easiest way to take a simple sweater from Evening Appeal - One Shoulder w Tie Sleevebasic to bold? You guessed it…a statement sleeve! A carry over from our favorite spring blouses, this season big, bold sleeves have made their way into the sweater arena.  From tiered to flared to balloon, we’re certainly spoiled for choice. Admittedly, it’s hard to stop at just one – and who would want to?  It’s the easiest way I know to up the fun factor to your sweater wardrobe.  This bell-sleeve beauty is accented with plush velvet ribbons to add a romantic look and feel to this cozy and seasonal companion.  (Available at Nordstrom.)

Sure sweaters serve a purpose. However this fall there’s no need to sacrifice fashion for function.  Here’s to a cozy, yet stylish sweater season!
